APE IN A CAPE: Some Personal Highlights From Geek... →
gailsimone:
These are purely personal, and being ON so many panels and events, I missed a lot of stuff. So this is just from a very limited perspective.
This event could have been a failure. It could have flopped. And if it had, it might have been years before anyone attempted another female nerd con of this…

Liberty Belle Redesign
Another redesign. Much more challenging on how to approach this. Trying to stay classic but modern, its interesting how it fell into place. Took away her pirate boots for more knee high fighting boots that are padded and can eliminate drag when she uses her super-speed. Her emblem is smaller and not so overpowering of her shirt. Went sleeveless with her shirt vs. midriff shirt? I dunno, the long...
StarGirl Redesign
Trying to see some other DC characters that could be redesigned. This Stargirl is a bit older, a bit wiser, a meld of two characters to an extent. An interesting first try. Maybe too otherworldly to be someone whose grounded on Earth. Hmm.

Wonder Woman 2 Versions
Yeah, that’s right, I mocked up a new Power Girl Cover. Its another tweak from my last version of her but I think its THE version I want to go with, but thats me. I placed that front cape to give her ties to her Kryptonian heritage. The script says, “Kara is Our Star” has a nod to her secret identity of Karen Starr. *I* thought it was clever. I also think the coloring is...
Catwoman
Catwoman. That’s all you REALLY have to say. I mean I could say “Sexy! Sexy! Sexy!” but alas, this one is not. Fully zipped n everything. I could have had just her and the skyline, but I rather tell a story, hence the window bars and the cutting. And the alarm being tripped. STORY, baby, STORY! *shrugs*
Huntress
Based offa DCnU look for Huntress. At least what I could see from Guillem March’s covers. She came out….okay, I think. A lot of details on her and I’m afraid that I didn’t take the time to really REALLY work on them, but still a successful first time.

Elphaba
The Wicked Witch of the West ala Wicked. I so enjoy drawing her. There’s just something about her tragic character that keeps me coming back for more. The book is amazing, the musical is AMAZING, and its just fun to draw. I originally thought of her looking down at her broom that she is enchanting to escape the Wizard’s guards, but because she’s in Act II dress, perhaps...
Wonder Woman
This is my entry to superheroofthemonth.com Challenge of a redesigned Wonder Woman. Well, here it is, its not too incredibly overdone. Yeah, she’s pretty battle ready. I wanted to used silver instead of gold, but gold looks soooo much better in this version, so I took it and ran. There’s a lot of elements I pulled from other artists and their versions of WW, but I still wanted an...
Some Power Girl
Another rework of the PG costume. More or less like my Version 3 but this time reworked coloring and tuned up the style of the costume. I think it really really works this time. All the basics are there.

Private Commission. Ron Weasley as an Auror.
Severus Snape
Private Commission.
Power Girl version4
Picked up some of the Superman: New Krypton Graphic Novels so I can get a reference of what Kryptonians wore. I designed this from the outfit that Alura wore in Volume 3. So again, trying to tie in with PG’s Kryptonian roots, because I figure on Earth-2, it can be anymore off than usual. I really think I got it in the right direction. I think.
Rose Weasley
Private Commission. Wanted Rose Weasley (one of the kids of Hermione/Ron) in Quidditch gear. Okay.
Death Eater
Private Commission. Wanted Daniel Craig as one of the Death Eaters from Harry Potter. James Bond with a wand, indeed.
Power Girl version3
Alright, version 3. A meld of 1 and 2. Went back to the single uniform. Return of the cape (the red just balances things, doesn’t it?) Longer gloves, not boots. And I placed the ‘S’ in the gold clasp shoulder thingy to have a tie to the House of L and being Kryptonian.
Catwoman (Jim Balent)
Private Commission. Wanted the Catwoman in purple. OH, that Catwoman!
Kitty Pryde
Private Commission. Wanted the classic Kitty. Okay!
Harry Potter
Nice Harry pic. Kinda an older Harry.
Oracle
This was for the Oracle Create-a-Thon. I whipped this baby up in an hour…ish.
Power Girl version2
Used the same pose to try and ‘pants’ PG. Keeping the same color scheme and extended her gloves and boots, showed a little tummy, and removed the cape. Its not too bad, she LOOKS like PG still and that’s what counts. Still some more tweaking is needed
Power Girl
So after finding out that Power Girl is going to get the bench for a while in the DCnU, I wanted to see if I could redo her as well and try to guess what DC might have in store for her. This version is a little tame, imo. An extension of color but not much else.
Wonder Woman
Here’s a try at the New NEW Wonder Woman for the new DC event in September. I kinda like the look. It would seem that Jim Lee won the fight for pants/no pants, and I like the silver vs. the gold look. It looks like he tried to incorporate ideas from both versions into this one. Now I know there are some missing details in mine, I drew this from the first Justice League pic and didn’t...
Ms. Marvel
Here’s a redesign I did for Ms. Marvel. I tried to tie both the fact that she’s an agent of SHIELD and still make her recognizable as Ms. Marvel. I chose not to place the lightning bolt onto her chest because I thought it would take away from the SHIELD elements on the costume.
V
Over on my Livejournal, I used to do a 30 day art challenge for myself. I would ask for 30 days of prompts and then would do a complete piece each day throughout the month. It ran for 4 years, before it ran out of steam. These things happen.
Black Canary
Black Canary, on the other hand, DID get Honorable Mention over at Project Rooftop, so there’s that. I wanted to run with a more ninja like Dinah, with fighting sticks and lock picks.
